Change something in your life? Mislead your brain. (part 2)
I don't want to sound negative about the brain. The brain belongs to us and it doesn't like it when we feel bad. But the solutions the brain comes up with for us are not always the best.
Part of our brain is the limbic system. And the amygdala is part of the limbic system. The amygdala is also referred to as the primitive brain.
This is where feelings of fear and aggression are produced and stored. This allows us to respond appropriately if we are in danger. The known fight, freeze or flight.
Which of the three do you choose when you are in danger? Maybe you say right now that you would fight, but you do the complete opposite when you find yourself in a certain situation..
You act primitive when you don't have a second to think.
The amygdala acts as a kind of guard dog. It prefers to keep everything as it is.
So if you suddenly decide to go for a run every night, the amygdala will also see this as danger and will do everything it can to keep everything as it is.
Well, the amygdala is also a sleeping guard dog. As long as there is no danger, he sleeps.
So what should you do if you really want to change something in your life? Make sure the amygdala does not wake up..
So don't try to run 5 km from one day to the next. But build it up slowly. Do not say that you will never drink again, but start by, for example, not drinking during the week. Instead of a few cookies after dinner, have a nice cup of low-fat cottage cheese with some fruit.
Of course there are people who manage to change something in one fell swoop. Unfortunately, this does not apply to most people.
With this tip the chance of success is considerably increased.
